Ford adds Lightning Flash trim amidst challenges. The Ford Lightning Flash, a new trim for the fully electric truck, has been announced by Ford amidst the ongoing United Auto Workers union strike. Positioned between the midrange Lariat and the higher XLT trim levels, the Flash aims to attract customers with new features.

One of the most significant additions is the increased range, with an estimated 320 miles on a full charge compared to standard range models that fall below 300 miles. The Flash also includes a heat pump for the truck's batteries, addressing the issue of reduced range in cold climates. However, it is yet to be determined how effective the heat pump will be in solving this problem. Priced at $69,995, the Flash still qualifies for the federal EV tax credit, bringing the effective price down to $62,495. The trim will also offer various technological upgrades, such as a 15.5-inch touchscreen, wireless charging pad, and the latest version of Ford's advanced driver assistance system.

Despite the positive developments in the electric truck market, Ford's EV business as a whole has struggled to turn a profit. The company expects to lose $4.5 billion on its EV business in 2023 and has delayed its goal of producing 600,000 EVs per year, as well as abandoning the target of 2 million EVs produced by 2026. The United Auto Workers strike may further impact Ford's losses, with layoffs and disruptions in the supply chain. While the shift towards EVs may result in fewer jobs for skilled labor, the UAW members are still advocating for more job security.

It remains to be seen how the strike and the transition to EVs will ultimately affect the automotive industry as a whole in the United States.
