Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has provided a sneak peek of its upcoming genera. AI Chatbots Are Coming To Meta Platforms
During a recent session, a spokesperson from Meta provided a summary of the company's dive into the artificial intelligence space. Meta is developing several AI technologies, including internal-only products such as an AI productivity assistant and an experimental interface for interacting with artificial intelligence agents. These products are powered by Meta's large language model LLaMA.
In addition to consumer-facing AI agents and photo-editing tools, Meta plans to host an internal AI hackathon in July focused on generative AI. The company is hopeful that this event could result in new AI products eventually reaching Meta's users.
During the presentation, Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, emphasized the company's generative AI plans and provided commentary about where the company sees the AI space heading.
“In the last year, we’ve seen some incredible breakthroughs- qualitative breakthroughs – on generative AI, and that allows us to take that technology now, push it forward, and build it into every single one of our products. We will play an essential and unique role in the industry in bringing these capabilities to billions of people in new ways that others aren’t going to do.
Meta is planning to launch its AI agents on Messenger and WhatsApp. However, the company envisions a wider future for these technologies that could span across its suite of applications and eventually extend to smart glasses. According to Zuckerberg, the idea is that users would wear smart glasses, like Meta's Ray-Ban Stories, to communicate with the agents through voice commands.
Moreover, during the meeting, Meta revealed that it was experimenting with artificial intelligence that would enable users to modify their photos for sharing on Instagram Stories through a text prompt. This initiative is a response to the increasing consumer demand for AI photo editors, including the viral trend of AI avatars that emerged last year, which propelled apps like Lensa AI to the top of the App Store.
AI in Messenger and WhatsApp
Meta is incorporating AI tools, such as AI agents with various personalities and capabilities, to enhance the user experience on WhatsApp and Messenger. The platform is planning to introduce AI stickers in Messenger that can be generated from a text prompt. Additionally, they are working on a project that would allow users to type in a prompt on how they want to edit a photo they plan to post to Instagram Stories, which has yet to enter internal testing.
The advantage for consumers is that Meta's entry into this space would make these tools free to use, thanks to their ad-supported business model. In contrast, most competing apps on the App Store offer only limited AI edits for free and then push users into ongoing subscriptions to access all the features.
Further, Ahmed Al-Dahle, Meta’s vice president, asserted:
“With AI-generated stickers, our users can have infinitely more options for self-expression, cultural representations, and even trend relevance. Of course, stickers are just the tip of the iceberg.
The company has introduced AI tools that enable users to modify images by adjusting their aspect ratio or transforming them into paintings. Additionally, they have launched a productivity assistant for employees named Metamate, which can perform tasks and answer queries using data from internal company systems.
