According to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), TikTok has been found to promote the use of dangerous and illegal steroids and steroid-like drugs among teenagers, while also promoting unhealthy body image standards. The CCDH discovered that videos containing hashtags promoting the use of these substances have amassed over 580 million views from US users alone in the past three years, with the majority of these views coming from young men aged 18-24. This trend is a cause for concern as young men are also affected by the mental health effects of unhealthy body standards. The CEO of CCDH has described this as a growing crisis among young boys and men, which is being amplified by unaccountable algorithms. The use of steroids is a heavy undercurrent of the overall trend of high body standards, making it a uniquely dangerous issue.

TikTok Ignores Teen Steroid/SARM Promotion Videos. The Rise of Steroids: From Testosterone to Trenbolone
Young men are increasingly using steroids and other substances known as SARMs, or selective androgenic receptor modulators, such as trenbolone (commonly referred to as "tren"). It is important to note that these substances can be dangerous, especially when used without proper medical guidance and supervision. TikTok Ignores Teen Steroid/SARM Promotion Videos.
Testosterone, which is a naturally occurring hormone, is considered one of the most effective steroids. It plays a crucial role in promoting muscle growth, regulating libido, bone mass, fat distribution, strength, red blood cell production, and sperm production.
When individuals have lower than normal levels of testosterone, they may experience various symptoms, and doctors may prescribe testosterone therapy to restore their hormone levels to normal. While this type of steroid use is generally safe, it is not without potential risks.
Men who undergo testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for extended periods may face an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks and strokes, which could be life-threatening. Additionally, the use of other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), such as SARMs, can pose even greater dangers and risks.
Testosterone is classified as a Schedule III drug, meaning it cannot be obtained legally in the United States without a doctor's prescription. This is why many young men turn to more dangerous steroids and PEDs.
SARMs are drugs that attempt to mimic the muscle-building and strength-enhancing effects of testosterone. Some SARMs, like trenbolone, are relatively new, and the FDA has not yet added them to the list of scheduled substances.
As a result, these drugs can be sold by sellers in the gray market, often labeled as "Not for human consumption" to evade FDA oversight. Due to their novelty, the side effects and long-term effects of SARMs are not fully understood.
However, it is known that many of these substances can be extremely hazardous. They can cause severe side effects, including cardiovascular issues like heart attacks, strokes, and even death, as well as infertility, liver disease, psychosis, and more.
In April, the FDA issued a warning regarding the widespread use of SARMs among young men. However, it appears that this warning has had minimal impact. The FDA has taken some measures to shut down SARM sellers and has even arrested an individual who packaged and sold these drugs as dietary supplements, paving the way for legal action.
Nevertheless, the FDA faces challenges in regulating websites that sell SARMs as research chemicals until they can be thoroughly studied and officially scheduled. It is difficult to prove that these substances are being sold for human consumption, limiting the agency's enforcement capabilities.
TikTok Influencers Are Misrepresenting PEDs for a Buck
The CCDH has discovered that 35 TikTok influencers have ties to vendors selling steroids or steroid-like drugs, which are being marketed to millions of young men. These drugs are considered to be extremely dangerous and have a potential to cause serious harm. The influencers have a total of 1.8 million followers who are being targeted for these drugs. Unfortunately, many of these influencers are not providing a fair representation of the potential side effects of these drugs. In some cases, they are intentionally marketing to teens, which is clearly against TikTok's rules. The platform must take action to moderate this content and prevent young men from being harmed by dangerous misrepresentations of these drugs.
